Burnum: A Journey Through Roman Legacy in Krka National Park
The Roman military camp Burnum is located within the Krka National Park in Ivoševci village, north of Kistanje. Time has preserved the remnants of the military command building arches and a well-preserved amphitheater. It's hard to imagine that two millennia ago, this amphitheater could accommodate six to ten thousand people. The spirit of ancient times and games revives each summer during the Burnum Ides event organized by the Krka National Park since 2011.
This year marks twenty years of continuous Burnum research. Investigations began in autumn 2003 by the Krka National Park and the Drniš City Museum. With Italian experts, modern geophysical methods are used for virtual 3D reconstructions to visualize the site's presumed appearance.
A starlit performance titled "Sreća prati hrabre" will depict the amphitheater's history with renowned Croatian actors. Following this, popular Croatian musician, Matija Cvek, and his band The Funkensteins will perform. Cvek is best known for his original songs and has been awarded for his debut album.
The Burnum Ides also features a fair where visitors can experience aspects of ancient Roman life. This includes educational workshops, showcasing of legionary and gladiatorial skills, ancient crafts, and various entertainments of that era.
The term 'ides' in the Roman calendar pertains to the full moon days considered auspicious for festivities. Each year under the August sky, we recreate this region's history during Roman times, showcasing civilian and legionary life, their beliefs, daily activities, crafts, art, and magical rituals.
The amphitheater program begins at 9 pm. Admission is free.
